Aart Kooij is a street photographer currently living in Algeria. Originally from the Netherlands, Kooij has lived extensively in Asia and has published three photography books on Shanghai, Seoul, and Guangzhou.
He has exhibited work at the Rencontres d’Arles Photography Festival and various other galleries. His photographs have been featured by LensCulture, with press work appearing in Dutch newspapers such as NRC Handelsblad and Trouw. He has been commissioned for commercial work by both international and Dutch clients.
In 2021 and 2022, 30 of Kooij’s large-scale photographs were exhibited at the Museum Prinsenhof in Delft during Jingdezhen: 1000 years of Porcelain.
From 2020 to 2024 Kooij lived in Yangon, Myanmar, witnessing first hand the dramatic 2021 military coup. He spent the next years documenting the devastating consequences of the coup and the pandemic.
